Weekly CEB (Due April 12th) ------------ Obama's Health Care Bill

Dudes (and Dudettes),

Remember for your weekly CEBs you need to join the conversation and include in your discussion:
  1. I agree or disagree with Miss Telnaes' (the cartoonist's) viewpoint
  2. Here's why...
  3. Something that confirms you either read the details or watched the supporting videos (even a simple statement like "Yes, Mr. J, I watched the video" will work)
You will still receive 3 points for the assignment [one point for viewing it, one for agreeing/disagreeing, one for your reason(s)]. The discussion ends Thursday night for credit!

Now if you want extra credit, debate with your classmates and provide alternative points. Each counterpoint will be awarded.
Let the debates begin!!!!

BUT THEN COME BACK HERE TO MAKE YOUR COMMENTS!

President Obama's Health Care plan is being discussed and debated in the Supreme Court as you read this. Last week while you were on Spring Break 27 states sued the President over his pushing through the ObamaCare bill in 2009. The Court will make its final decision in June.

This bill more than any other in recent history will radically change the way you live and the way your children will live. It will allow government to force you to purchase anything it deems necessary.

If you want to learn more about ObamaCare - check out this little YouTube video from John R. Graham, the  Director of Health Care Studies at the Pacific Research Institute. WARNING - it's not too flattering!

[CBS has a summary that kinda explains the entire bill - which only costs $940 Billion over ten years - cheap, huh!]

But this debate is not new and has been going on for several years.
The GOP ("Grand Old Party" - a nickname for the Republican party) has been fighting it from day one.
In January 2010, Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, was interviewed on NBC's Sunday TV show, Meet the Press. He was quoted in the cartoon that you just watched.  The cartoonist only showed you a small portion of the interview, implying that the OLD WAY of health care (Doctors and Hospitals making a profit off people being sick and paying to be healed and taken care of) is hurting us all.

But is that what Senator McConnell was really saying? What was said in the entire interview?
Watch it here. (it's only about 4 minutes, 40 seconds)
Or if you would rather read the transcript - it can be found here.

But what will ObamaCare cost you and the American taxpayer?
Check this out! (And add your VOTE to the poll at the bottom of the page)

So - will ObamaCare help us or hurt us?
Health care is SO EXPENSIVE in this country - do you think it needs to be changed?
Isn't it terrible how the Republicans don't really care about citizens' health and want to keep it expensive to make more money for the big, rich health care industry?
And, what do you think of Obama's plan?

Join the darkside! DEBATE!....

  1. I watched the cartoon Mr. J. Based on my understanding of obamacare, I don't necessarily disagree with the concept, however, the means through which Obama forced this healthcare plan into legislation is abominable. Its true that forcing someone to buy something is anti-capitalism, but whether it is unconstitutional is a different story. However, for the president to force something through legislation is completely unconstitutional, (I believe) illegal, and completely unprecedented. While an argument could be made about the legality, I think the real issue right now is how this healthcare reform became law.

  2. You know, why not create a program where it operates on medical evaluation. If it's an automobile injury, it is placed in a department that deals with that, which has all options of insurance available, and majorly operates on donation. Serious injuries must be treated. Non-life threatening injuries wont be covered by this plan. Better yet, cut half of the government programs, and the influx of money will begin this kind of charity.
Also, Obama has hugely overstepped his bounds as president. It's pretty obvious when half of the states sue him.
One more thing. I don't agree with the Republican plan either. You cannot just sever financial ties. You have to reroute them somehow.

  3. I watched the video and read the transcript for the interview:)
I agree with both of you, on some levels. To reiterate, while Obamacare has good intentions it is completely unconstitutional and, as we discussed, is the most obvious sign of socialism in our country today. The largest issue is the cost, because everyone needs healthcare when only a portion of the US can afford it.
Obama put us (and himself) in a tight spot with Obamacare; because the whole situation is "darned if we do, darned if we don't." Its obvious America doesn't like Obamacare like senator McDonnell said. We can't continue in it, but if it ceases, the Republican party is literally at a loss at what we'll do instead.
My opinion? Doctors make soooo much. So do pharmacists. If we cut income slightly for these people, that would make a difference. But that's not all. A simple check-up or physical costs money. What if we got rid of check ups and smaller visits and kept doctor visits to "holy crap I'm dying I need a medic etc etc" there are many ways we could minimize cost. Maybe that's what the GOP should evaluate next.

  4. Sorry my post is late Mr. Johnson!!!!

I believe this comic is basically poking fun at the fact that Senator McConnell says that we have to work "step by step" to review the cost of medicare while people are suffering with medical problems. I'd say yes, I agree that, in a perfect world, everyone should have some basic medical coverage that allows them to live their lives out as pain-free as possible. I agree with Zac that it is SEVERELY unconstitutional the way Obama has steamrolled it and forced it upon the people. However, I feel that battle is already lost. I was at one of my dad's rental properties today, sowing seed so that the lawn out front of the house would grow. When I asked my dad how the grass was destroyed in the first place, he said it was because the city of spokane valley had REQUIRED as of 2012 that every house hook up to the city sewer line, and thus the lawn had to be broken in to connect the house to the sewer. This is one of probably hundreds of examples where the government, be it local or federal, has required us to do one thing or another. Therefore, who's to say the government SHOULDN'T require medical insurance for every citizen? Who's to say the government SHOULDN'T have regulations on our food? Who's to say it shouldn't regulate manufacturing methods? The United States government has its fingers in so many pies nowadays. They become the largest business in whatever industry the swallow up for themselves. Medical care happens to be on the menu this year.

And I read the transcript from the video where Mr. Gregory and Sen. McConnell bickered and talked over each other so much that the text evens shows it ! :P

  5. Hey y'all - Emily's computer wouldn't allow her to login (silly PC....she really needs a Mac!). So here's Emily's comments for you to consider:

"America is in enough debt as it is, so where are we going to find the $ to pay for this new health care plan? It's unconstitutional that the government should tell us what to buy and what not to buy, for that is not capitalism, and America was purposed as the land of opportunity for those daring enough to go out and make a products and create profit, w/o the government always breathing down their necks...I do not agree with Mr. McConnell's viewpoint of how the "old way" of running hospitals are hurting us. Being a doctor is just another job, and the building called a hospital is just his job location, and so it should be treated as any other work place."

    Thanx, Emily!

    Mr. J.
