CEBs - Week of May 7th - the TRUTH!

Ostriches are lovely creatures.
Tall, strong, fast...and cowardly. Whenever danger approaches them they stick their head in the ground (technically, they really don't, but the concept is apart of our language to describe avoiding the truth).
I mean....hey! Why face reality when you can just stick you head down, your tail-end up and just....well....hide!

Like so many in our culture when it comes to the truth.

So for this, our last CEB assignment, join in a discussion with the following:
  1. Do you agree or disagree?
  2. Why?
  3. Refer to the following article link...
It's true Miss Telnaes' cartoon above was provided before 2009's Christmas (hence the music at the end). But does she have a point?

I mean all you conservative-like folk keep going on and on and on with all the negative...all the problems of our culture. I mean....can't you just shut up and enjoy the life our government and culture has provided you?

Check this out. What do you think?

Ah...I love ostriches....

  1. I agree. I mean, this really is all we have. Sure, Heaven is coming, and we are going to a better place. But doesn't that give us at least a little freedom to enjoy the earth? Stop worrying about the nuances! It's merely perpetuating unfulfilling arguments. Just check out and enjoy yourself a little more.

  2. I'm not sure if I agree with the comic, but I perhaps agree with some reasoning behind it. Let me ask you, why should anyone care about "the issues"? "Politics is just one big mudslinging fight which no one wins, except maybe the media." That actually wasn't far from my thoughts before taking this Civics class. And, so far as I can tell, that IS what politics is nowadays. However, that is not what government is. I used to equate the two. What kind of education does the populace have on what government is? Do they even know how big a difference we could make? The answer, as shown by the comic, is a resounding, "No." And to drive my point home, how often have you heard this during an election, "I'm not going to vote this year, after all, I'm only one vote, how could that possibly make a difference?"

  3. Oh man, those Conservatives. How dare they not support gay marriage and abortion. They're so old fashioned, so ignorant. Ya know, its really horrible that they are trying to preserve good, wholesome, family, American values.
Conservatives get a bad rep because honestly, if another Ronald Reagan were to walk on the scene today, not only would they be shut down by political propaganda, but they could even get as close as Santorum did.

  4. Gerry, I completely disagree with your statement. Or, are you implying that you think propaganda is more powerful than God? Romans 13:1-7 states that God appoints ALL authority. Couldn't God give a conservative, God-fearing man the rhetorical ability to trounce this "propaganda?" A man well versed enough to persuade even some liberals? Remember, the Holy Spirit still resides here on this earth. And God has His hand in everything, especially as we can see (Romans 13) our government.

    1. Wow Zac, way to make me look like a heathen.
On the contrary, do you not know that the devil is the prince of this earth?! God appoints authority, buuuut he also respects our sinful wishes of rejecting him. Which is why Hell is volunteer for all who choose to reject him. We have free will. Humans therefore elect those in office, even if they're flaming atheists. Why? Because God allows us to destroy ourselves if we so choose. The beauty of it all though is that in the end, justice will be served, and God wins. God pwnnzzz xD

    2. So would God giving a man the rhetorical ability to persuade even some liberals violate a person's free will? If so, how? If not, then why is it not a possibility that we may, in today's culture, have a conservative, God-fearing president?

    3. Its a blessing, not a form of mind control. When the Holy Spirit comes upon you it can "control" you in a sense to do whatever God has placed upon your heart to do. But for that to happen, you must first and foremost accept him into your heart. And THAT is your choice.

    6. But doesn't waht your implying mean that we the only abilities we get from God are the spiritual ones? Are not our natural talents a God-given attribute as well? Or do we have those of our own efforts, completely separate from God? I'm saying a person is born with a strong, rhetorical ability (obviously, granted by God), and that this person is also God-fearing, therefore becoming President (possibly). Or do you believe the media would likewise tear down this person because, as you said, "The devil is the prince of this earth."

  5. Yes which is why I said a Reagan figure of today would be ripped to shreds, regardless of his rhetorical ability. Even the holy spirit flowing through him people would reject. People either accept it, or reject it.

  6. Think about the news headlines of any newspaper or the media on any tv or the internet. All of the media is negative, somebody got killed, or had an affair, or killed somebody else. Negative news sells. I don't know why, but that is how things are. I disagree that we should just shut up and do live out life that government provided for us. Yes, there are some days that it seems easiest to just go live out on a farm in the middle of nowhere and eat off the land without distractions like politics. But... it's still there, whether you choose to think it exists or not, and it still controls you.

I've come to see government as a science experiment. What they seem to do is try different options and different ideas to see if they work. Whether they work or not however, they stay on until someone tells them to get rid of the bad ideas, and sometimes the good ones too. The only way to get done what WE think needs to be done is to do it ourselves. Politics is an active sport. If someones isn't active in their society, nothing will be done in their favor. Why should it? If nothing was ventured, why should anything be gained?

That's one of the huge differences between Islam and Christianity I think too. Christians SHOULD be active in politics, but just aren't, whereas Islam has politics as one of the foundations of their beliefs. Heck, they even have their own law!

The point of the matter is this: if one feels satisfied with the way government and culture are, by all means, sit back and enjoy the ride. If not, keep fighting, keep pushing. Because if you don't, someone else will. I think that's what has happened to our culture. Hollywood keeps pushing, gay marriage keeps pushing, abortion kept pushing, and there was little to no resistance.
